Seven of the Most Confusing Moments in the Friday the 13th Franchise

Friday the 13th - Jason Voorhees - Most confusing moments in friday the 13th movies

As much as we love the Friday the 13th series here—and trust me, we do—there are things you can’t help but notice as you watch these films over and over again. Things that have been long debated by fans because they stand out as confusing, things that the writers either didn’t think about, refused to answer, or just hoped nobody would notice.

Some of these things do get explained, though. People seem to have the most questions about Alice’s death at the beginning of Part 2. More than anything else in the series, you hear fans ask how Jason got a plane ticket and went to kill Alice at her home, wherever that may be. First of all, this sort of naturally assumes that all towns are flying distance from Crystal Lake, but regardless this question is addressed in the movie. It’s a year after the original and Alice has returned to the town near the camp to try and deal with the memory head-on. So that’s why everyone’s favorite question won’t be making an appearance on this list.

There are, however, so many other questions worth addressing. I know some fans have asked them over the years, mostly to themselves while watching them unfold on screen, most of us with a dumbfounded expression.

Axel’s Workout/Yoga Video in The Final Chapter

No, really, what is this video? Is it an adult film? Is it a workout video? It looks like Axel just flips the channel to turn back and forth to it. If it’s actually something airing on TV, that makes even less sense, but I guess it would have to be if he just presses a button to get to the news. Even if it’s just a workout tape it feels way too, uh, intimate. Is it a music video? These are the the questions to which fans need answers!

'workout' video in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter The Homoerotic Shaving Scene in Jason Goes to Hell

So, after Jason possesses the mortician and spends a bit of time in that body, he picks out Deputy Josh as his next and then proceeds to, erm, tie Josh down and shave his entire body. Yep, Jason shaves him from head to toe. According to director Adam Marcus, the reason this scene is in the movie is solely because he knew a scene like this would have people talking for years to come, and he was right.

Jason Goes to HellJason Turning into a Kid in Jason Takes Manhattan

So, at the end of Jason Takes Manhattan, Jason gets melted by toxic waste. Right before being melted, he’s running around vomiting and screaming after being unmasked and right before the waste hits him, he says “Mommy.” Then he’s bombarded and when the toxic waste clears, he’s a child again. Obviously, the next entry wisely ignores this. Although, given that main character Rennie suffers from hallucinations throughout the entire film, it could simply be another one of those.

Jason Takes ManhattanThe Very Well-Preserved Zombie Dad in The New Blood

In The New Blood, protagonist Tina is weighed down with guilt because she killed her father as a child in a fit of rage and frustration because she was unable to control her telekinetic abilities. She accidentally resurrects Jason while trying to bring her father back to life and succeeds in doing so at the end, causing her father to burst out of the lake and drag Jason back down with him. Whereas Jason is rotted to hell, Tina’s dad looks the same as he did in the flashback, only wetter.

Friday the 13th Part VII: The New BloodWhy is Jason a grown man?

Friday the 13th Part 2 kind of negates everything done in the original by presuming that Jason didn’t actually die and grew up in the surrounding wilderness, which makes no sense because why wouldn’t he stop Alice from killing his mom or at least let her know he was alive if that was the case? Either way, as much as we love Jason Voorhees, bringing him back as the killer was a bit of a sloppy move that led to over thirty-years of unanswered questions.

Friday the 13th Part 2 1981Jimmy’s Dancing in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter

It might be one of the franchise’s most iconic moments, but that’s mostly because it just comes out of nowhere. It’s so unexpected. Crispin Glover plays this scene like an alien who has witnessed dancing for the first time and tries it out with only the most basic understanding of what it entails. Apparently, he was actually dancing to AC/DC’s “Back in Black” on the set, but that’s no excuse for those moves, of which I am admittedly a little jealous.

Crispin Glover in Friday the 13th The Final ChapterWhere’s Paul?

No, really, what happened to Paul at the end of Friday the 13th Part 2? Where did he go? He gets knocked down in that first fight with Jason and we assume he’s dead when Ginny takes off running and kicks off the big climactic chase sequence. But then he pops back up to save Ginny inside of Jason’s shack and again gets knocked down. He shows up at the end and is right there beside her when Jason bursts through the window. Did Jason kill Paul afterwards? Was that whole scene a dream? Ginny’s carted away, repeatedly asking “Where’s Paul?” and getting no answer. That’s no fair, Steve Miner. The people have a right to know.
