In Ouija, a group of close friends reeling from the death of one of their comrades attempt to make contact with the other side. Instead of reaching their fallen friend, the group instead gets ahold of a vengeful spirit that wreaks havoc on the lives of those who have awakened it.
The road to the big screen has been a tumultuous one for Ouija. The film was originally slated for a November 2012 release but has been pushed back several times due to budgetary disagreements. The film also went through several potential screenwriters and directors before finally landing the creative team that made the film. Universal was originally planning on a budget of $80 to $100 million but reportedly later became opposed to the high dollar amount the film was going to require to make. After Universal pulled out and the project was thought to be dead in the water, a plan to make the picture on a lower budget was hatched. Blumhouse productions became involved and Universal later re-committed to the project.
This upcoming spirit board horror-thriller is directed by Stiles White. Previously an effects man, Ouija is White’s first time in the director’s chair. White also co-penned the script with Juliet Snowden (The Possession). Ouija will star Olivia Cooke (The Quiet Ones) and relative newcomers Ana Coto and Daren Kagasoff. The film has been given a PG-13 classification by the MPAA and it is set to see release October 24, 2014.
