Todd McFarlane Has Finally Finished the Spawn Reboot Script

spawn 1997 - Todd McFarlane

Legendary comic creator Todd McFarlane spoke with ComicBook.com today to provide a major update on the status of his long talked about reboot of his most famous creation, Spawn.

While the character is not so well known today, Spawn was a major force in comics in the 1990s. The success of the indie comic led to both a major motion picture and an animated HBO series that lasted for three seasons. The film was a critical failure, however, and the book was never quite as popular after its release as it had been before.

For over a decade, McFarlane has talked about rebooting Spawn as a hard-R, indie horror movie instead of another heavy action vehicle. Fans were eager for this new take, but it’s been a long time now and McFarlane has offered nothing more than the occasional continued tease as to the reboot’s direction and style.

Now, McFarlane confirms he has finished the script and offers a little more insight into how the Spawn character will be treated. “In the background, there’s this thing moving around, this boogeyman. That boogeyman just happens to be something that you and I, intellectually, know is Spawn. Will he look like he did in the first movie? No. Will he have a supervillain he fights? No. He’s going to be the spectre, the ghost.”

McFarlane also sums up his intentions in a refreshingly direct (and surprisingly do-able) way: “Basically, I can make this version of the movie on a budget without crazy special effects… I want to keep it small, keep it tight, so they’ll let me direct it!

No word as of yet on where the project will head next or when production might begin. Either way, stay tuned as more news on the new Spawn develops.
