The Ring 3D Receives New Script Writer

Rings

Just last month, F. Javier Gutierrez signed on to direct Paramount’s next U.S installment to The Ring franchise; The Ring 3D, and now Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman has been signed on to pen a new draft of the script.

David Loucka (Dream House, House at the End of the Street) penned the first script but Goldman will be coming in to tackle another draft. The Ring 3D story is said to follow the return of an ominous video tape that, upon watching, will lead to the viewer’s death from the implacable spirit Samara. Currently, it isn’t clear if The Ring one and two star Naomi Watts will return for the follow-up.

The project was initially envisioned as a 3D sequel, although it wasn’t clear when F. Javier Gutierrez joined if it will be crafted in 3D, or converted in post-production. New writer Goldsman has scripted films such as A Beautiful Mind, I am Legend, I, Robot, Cinderella Man, and The Da Vinci Code to name a few.

Based on a Japanese cult success, the first U.S. film; The Ring, went on to gross $249 million at the worldwide box office.

The last installment; The Ring Two, was released nearly 10 years ago. Samara will need to upgrade to contemporary technology… I mean, does anyone still own a VCR nowadays?
