Hulu has announced two new additions to the cast of the critically-acclaimed series The Handmaid’s Tale. The finale of season two left the fate of many major players up in the air. Motherhood was the main theme of the sophomore season. Specifically, the idea of what makes a true mother. Both June (Elisabeth Moss) and Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) were faced with life-changing choices in the finale. They made their decisions based on what they believed was best for the children. In Gilead, women are allowed very few choices. The fact that these two different women were able to make a choice shows the change that is coming. Slowly, but surely.

A new commander and his wife are now coming into the world of Gilead. Christopher Meloni (Oz, Law and Order: SVU) is set to play Commander Winslow. This Commander is said to be a “powerful figure” and will be the host for Fred (Joseph Fiennes) and Serena Joy on an “important trip.” Elizabeth Reaser (The Haunting of Hill House) will play his wife and will become an “inspiration” to Serena Joy. This can mean many things for the Waterford’s and especially for Mrs. Waterford. Serena Joy can be misled at times and in her passion become homicidally dangerous. Or, surprisingly generous. One never knows.
Furthermore, Hulu states that season three will be a continuation of June’s fight against overwhelming odds. The oppression will continue but the rebellious prayer “Blessed be the fight” will keep her going as strong as ever.
The Handmaid’s Tale is an eleven-time Emmy award-winning drama series. The new season will premiere in 2019.
