Is Re-Animator: Evolution Actually A Remake?

Herbert West from 1985's Re-Animator.

Last week, we brought you the rather exciting (depending on who you talk to) news that there’s finally another Re-Animator sequel on the way for real.

The flick is reportedly set to star genre stalwarts Lin Shaye and Brad Dourif, but the likes of Jeffrey Combs, Brian Yuzna and Stuart Gordon don’t appear to be attached (yet).

We were trying not to get too excited because it all seemed a bit up in the air, in spite of a pretty convincing IMDb post.

Now, according to Bloody DisgustingRe-Animator: Evolution is very much a reality. However, rather than a straight sequel, the movie appears to have been envisioned more as a remake of the cult classic.

Director Serge Levin described it thus:

Our adaptation is a modern rendition of Herbert West – ‘Reanimator’ by H.P. Lovecraft… we’re making sure that the spirit and the story elements are more loyal to the original written material… It’s much darker, more thought provoking, and definitely more grounded in science than the first adaptation

BD also confirmed that Johnathon Schaech (TV’s Ray Donovan, the Prom Night remake), who co-wrote the script with Levin, is set to star as Herbert West himself with the director appearing as his assistant.

Pursued by the police, an ambitious neuroscientist uses a neutrino impulse to bring his dead wife back to life, unintentionally unlocking within her dormant powers that threaten the existence of everyone he knows.

Stay tuned to Wicked Horror for more on this story as it develops.
