The Blair Witch Project is something of a dead franchise that just won’t stay dead. Every so often, we hear rumblings about a potential third installment or remake and then those rumors end up being unsubstantiated or the project fizzles for one reason or another. Well, recently Bloody Disgusting reported that there was movement on the franchise and that we should gear up for a potentially bigger announcement in the coming days.
BD says that an insider has told them that LionsGate may already be working on a third installment in the Blair Witch series. As for whether it’s a sequel, a remake, a spinoff, or something else entirely is still unknown.
The outlet is wagering that the Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett collaboration The Woods could be the project in question but they are currently unable to back that up with anything more than speculation.
What we do know about The Woods is that it “involves a group of college students on a camping trip who discover they are not alone.” BD thinks that sounds like a perfect setup for a new Blair Witch film but there’s not yet enough credible information available. I would love to see the duo behind You’re Next and The Guest take on The Blair Witch but I just don’t think there’s enough evidence at this point to be anything more than skeptical about Barrett and Wingard being involved in any capacity. Especially when considering that Blair Witch co-creator Eduardo Sanchez told Movies.Com less than a month ago that that he and Daniel Myrick were interested in doing a third Blair Witch film with LionsGate. If The Woods is a sequel to The Blair Witch Project, one would expect that Sanchez would have gotten word of it by the time the project was in development.
