Horror Block Unboxing – March 2016

Unboxing Horror Block

Nerd Block is a subscription mystery box that delivers geeky collectibles right to your door each month. You can choose whatever theme box you are into–there’s the Classic Block, Arcade Block, Sci-Fi Block, Horror Block, Comic Block, and even a Boys Jr. and Girls Jr. Block for younger kids. The sets always includes a t-shirt, along with 4-6 other collectibles that are often exclusive to Nerd Block subscribers. I, of course, chose the Horror Block to try out for a six-month subscription to see what kind of goodies they had to offer. Today we are unboxing the March 2016 Horror Block.

The Walking Dead zomibe figurine in the March 2016 Horror Block

This month’s block featured zombies aplenty, with almost every item having to do with the undead. We’ll start with this mini building set for The Walking Dead from McFarlane. There are several character figurines available in each series of the toys, and you don’t know just which one you got until you open it up. I ended up getting figure #148, the Prison Jumpsuit Walker, who is almost 2 inches tall and has his guts spilling out of his stomach.

Zombie dog tags in the March 2016 Horror BlockNext up is this bonus item (I thought there were more items than usual this month!), a set of Zombie Hunter dog tags, complete with chain. The box they came in is actually just as cool as the dog tags themselves, which are of a nice quality and serve as a great piece of unisex jewelry. If anyone wants to look closely, they’ll see that they’re not just your ordinary dog tags, they’re the “best way for you to stand out from any members of the undead!”

Monster squeeze toy in the March 2016 Horror BlockFor the stressful moments in life, Horror Block wants to help you out by providing you with this stress ball. The description says it’s a zombie, but it looks more like a little monster to me. The gel inside the toy is pink, with lots of little white balls inside, so when you squeeze it, it looks like the monster’s guts are poking out. Who doesn’t get joy out of something like this? It kept me entertained for a good ten minutes when I first opened it.

A zombie door stop in the March 2016 Horror BlockAnother unique item exclusive to Horror Block this month is this zombie doorstop. It features mostly the top part of the torso of a grayish, white-eyed zombie with red intestines spilling out the back for the part that goes under the door. This way, it looks like you’ve crushed a mini-zombie with your door, and that’s honestly just cool.

Zombie backscratcher in the March 2016 Horror BlockIf you forced me to pick a favorite item from the March block, I’d have to go with the zombie backscratcher. This thing seriously hasn’t left my side all night, I love it. It comes with a nice cushioned red handle that is extendable up to well over a foot to give you access to all those hard-to-reach places. The soothing scratching part of this item is a skeletal zombie hand with open wounds and blood. Usually the t-shirt is my favorite part of the block, but I am so ridiculously excited about this backscratcher for some reason. It’s one of those things that you always need, but never have on hand. And now I do.

Zombie oven mitt in the March 2016 Horror BlockRunner-up for best March block item–and really one of the best items from any of my blocks so far–is this wicked cool zombie oven mitt. It’s a great quality mitt that is the perfect size, and is black with a green zombie hand on one side. It’s things that actually have every day use that are most valuable to me. When I first signed up for Horror Block, I received a free Welcome Block (an option that is sadly not available anymore) that included a blood-splattered kitchen towel, so these two items go together perfectly.

The Ring t-shirt in the March 2016 Horror BlockGoing against the theme of this month’s block is the t-shirt. Instead of a zombie, this t-shirt from ShirtPunch has an image of the ghostly Samara from the film The Ring. What I love about the shirts from this company is that they are not always so obvious about what movie they are representing–you have to know what the image is to really get it sometimes.

Rue Morgue issue #165 in the March 2016 Horror BlockLast but not least, we have the April 2016 edition of Rue Morgue magazine. Issue #165 includes a huge interview with Rob Zombie about his new album The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser, which he says is his best yet, and his film 31. There’s also a retrospective on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2; a look at Wes Craven’s final film The Girl in the Photographs; Blu-Ray reviews; and several other interesting features that I can’t wait to get into.

The March 2016 Horror Block is fantastic. Every item is either fun or functional, and that backscratcher is my new best friend. Next month’s block will include something from one of my favorite horror films, Hellraiser, so fingers crossed for something good!
