Exclusive Report!: My Bloody Valentine 2: Miner Discomfort Announced

My Bloody Valentine 2: Miner Discomfort

*This article originally ran as an April Fool’s Day joke* We’ve got breaking news regarding the long overdue sequel to slasher classic My Bloody Valentine as well as an exclusive poster debut (below). A rumor broke out back in February that a new film was in development, but there was no news on it at the time. When questioned, Todd Farmer, co-writer of the 2009 reboot, could only say that he was not involved and it was “totally in the studio’s hands.”

Rumors persisted, and it was beginning to circulate that horror veteran Steve Miner would be helming the long-anticipated production. At the time, Miner dodged the question, only saying “A lot of people think I outgrew slashers or whatever, but the reality is that I went where the job was, like any working director. I’d love to do another slasher film, whether it be My Bloody Valentine I can’t really speak to at this time…”

Well, hold on to your butts, because here, today at Wicked Horror not only can we OFFICIALLY confirm that Steve Miner will be helming the sequel—now titled My Bloody Valentine 2: Miner Discomfort—but we sat down with the director to talk briefly about the new movie.

The killer from 1981's My Bloody Valentine.

First and foremost, is MBV 2 a sequel to the 1981 original or the 2009 remake? Or is there any truth to the rumors that the director is ignoring all previous entries? “We’re doing our own thing with it,” said Miner. “We’re very mindful of the fans. We know what the fans want. And we’re taking great care with the continuity, but that’s really all I can say right now.”

Miner did say, however, that he was a fan of the original film. “Oh, yeah. Back when I was working on the Friday the 13th pictures and the first one came out, I went and saw it and thought it was great. Really well done, it was a big influence on my approach when I came back for Part III.”

The director was mum on most details about the film, but did surprise us with a few interesting tidbits when asked about how far along in the process they were. “Very far. Really far,” he said. “We’re about to start shooting next month up in Vancouver, in fact. I think I can safely say that much.”

So there’s already a script in place? “Oh, yeah. We’ve got a great script by Robert Zappia, who wrote H20. He tied things together in a very interesting way.”

My Bloody Valentine 3DBut will it be tied to the 2009 movie or the 1981 original? “You’ll have to wait and see. Robert did a really cool thing by sort of looking at what had come before, but really making this its own movie. It acknowledges certain aspects. But it’s totally its own beast. Fans are going to have a blast with it. We’re filming with a great Canadian cast, including—I think I can announce this—Avril Lavigne. We didn’t even know it, but it turns out she’s a big fan of My Bloody Valentine and really wanted to be a part of it when she heard we were shooting up there.”

Miner kept quiet on any major story details, but said that they are indeed trying to aim for a February 2017 release date. “We’re getting under way, so I think it’s a safe bet that it’ll be out there by Valentine’s Day next year.”

Was there anything else Miner wanted to add? “Two things. Lake Placid is a brilliant movie and everybody should see it. And also, April Fools. April Fool’s Day. That’s one I’d like to remake,” he said with a knowing wink.
