Deep Breaths. John Carpenter Teasing a Return to Horror(!)

John Carpenter

Master of horror John Carpenter hasn’t gifted us a horror movie in almost a decade. Not since the spooky, Amber Heard-starring The Ward which, in spite of good intentions, kind of fell flat, have we felt that old, unmistakable Carpenter glow. Most of us assumed his reign of terror was over. But, a new interview suggests all is not lost.

Carpenter was in conversation with Collider at Cannes earlier this week and, when pressed on whether he’d ever return to the dark-side himself, the great man hinted there may be something in the works:

I don’t have one [a horror movie] scheduled but I’m working on things. I made a lot of movies and I got burned out and I had to stop for a while. I have to have a life. Circumstance would have to be correct for me to do it again

Naturally, the site pressed him further, and Carpenter delivered the goods, telling them he’d be delighted to do it:

I’d love to make a little horror film… that would be great

Naturally, the horror master has some conditions, not least of which the fact he’s much older than in his heyday. He understands the reality of making movies nowadays, too, and how much everything has changed:

It would be a project that I like that’s budgeted correctly. Nowadays they make these young directors do movies for $2 million when the movie is written for $10 million. So you have to squeeze it all in there and I don’t want to do that any more

Carpenter also suggested he’d be open to helming a TV series if the right project came around.

Those of us holding out for one more Carpenter horror movie suddenly have reason to be optimistic! All hope is not lost!

Stay tuned to Wicked Horror for more info if/when it becomes available. Fingers crossed.
