New on Netflix is a weekly feature here at Wicked Horror where we look at the most recent horror-themed additions to everyone’s favorite streaming service. Things may always be a hit or miss, and it can’t hard to predict and even harder to sort through titles, so let us take a look at what the month of August has to offer.
Asylum
There have been a lot of movies to use the title Asylum, but this 2005 film is more of an unexpected dark drama about a woman who has an affair with an institutionalized artist who had beaten his wife to death. Natasha Richardson gives a solid performance and this one is worth checking out for the dark subject matter alone.
The controversial remake of House on Sorority Row has actually gained something of a cult following in recent years. It didn’t have a lot of fans at the time of its release but now people have started to see it for what it is, which is a slick and stylishly made throwback slasher.
My Amityville Horror
It’s been a Netflix mainstay virtually since its release, but apparently it disappeared at some point. This is not your traditional Amityville Horror piece. Instead, the documentary is told from the perspective of Daniel Lutz, who was one of the children during that 28-day stay in the house. More than anything, it’s not so much about the supernatural as it is about how monstrous a person George Lutz could be.
Wrymwood: Road of the Dead
Yet another zombie apocalypse story, this one’s about a man who goes out into the zombie-infested world to try and find his sister, who was kidnapped and experimented on by a psychotic doctor. There are a lot of things going on at once here, but that at least means that it has a little something for just about everyone.
