New on Netflix is a weekly feature here at Wicked Horror where we take a gander at the latest horror additions to everyone’s favorite streaming service. Sometimes there are more to report, sometimes less, but with July it looks like we’ll thankfully be seeing a steady stream of content throughout the month. So, binge-watchers and casual streamers alike, get ready to take a look at what’s new to unwind with at your leisure. There’s not a ton in this first round, certainly no hidden gems, but both make for solid popcorn entertainment. Rest assured, there will be more additions as we continue through the month.
Saw V
It makes sense, considering Netflix put up Saw I-IV and I was a little surprised at the time that they didn’t just drop the whole franchise at once. It seems that the other movies are trickling in little by little, which probably has more to do with rights than anything else. In Saw V, Mark Hoffman–the last apprentice of Jigsaw–takes center stage. He’s being deemed a hero while others who are investigating him try to bring him down. Of course, in the meantime, another group of apparent strangers are stuck together and subjected to grisly new traps.
Underworld: Evolution at least gets points for picking up exactly where the original ended and carrying on the story from there. And really, it’s not all bad. While it took itself much too seriously and certainly got convoluted, that also meant that there was just too much mythology built up in that script to really be contained in a single film. Evolution is much more action-heavy than the first and with that in mind, it kind of feels like the most accessible Underworld movie to date. Kate Beckinsale continues to look stunning while kicking monster ass, so that doesn’t hurt, either.
